Awareness of best evidence-based practices that promote and support medication
administration structure, processes and outcomes are needed by the school nurse to
provide safe, legal, and appropriate student care. School nurses must carefully analyze
their medication current practices and district policies. Presentation of the 2021 National
Association of School Nurses (NASN) School Nursing Evidence-based Clinical Practice
Guideline: Medication Administration in Schools and The Guidelines for Pennsylvania

Schools for the Administration of Medications and Emergency Care (2010) will be reviewed
and applied to a case study to demonstrate nursing process steps required to provide safe
medication administration.

Learning Objectives

1. Recognize evidence-based practice recommendations of medication administration
safety for the certified school nurse.
2. Determine two evidence-based practice recommendations to decrease medication
errors in schools.
3. Identify two security measures/ resources to improve structure, process, and outcomes
of medication administration in schools.
